Designing a Pool Area Around a View of the Garden

Some properties have a garden worth looking at: a mature planting bed, a flowering border, a stand of trees or a carefully tended lawn. When a pool is added, it can either compete with that garden or become a frame for it. Designing the pool area around the garden view lets both enhance each other.

Place the pool to face the garden

Orienting seating and the pool so people look toward the garden makes the garden part of the pool experience. A pool positioned between the house and the garden can act as a reflecting foreground, doubling the view in still water.

Keep the view uninterrupted

Structures, equipment and tall features placed between seating and the garden can block the view. Keeping these elements to the sides preserves the garden as the focal point.

Use the pool's surface as a mirror

Still water reflects what lies beyond it. A pool with a darker interior can reflect the garden clearly, adding depth to the view.

Match materials to the garden

Natural materials, such as stone, wood and earth tones, often complement a garden setting. Bold or industrial materials may compete with the planting.

Protect the garden during construction

A valued garden should be protected during pool construction. Identifying plants to protect, keeping equipment off root zones and planning restoration help preserve it.

Plan for debris

Gardens drop leaves, petals and seeds. A garden near the pool will send some debris into the water. Placing the pool slightly away from heavy-shedding plants, or downwind of them, reduces cleanup.

Light the garden at night

Lighting the garden, with soft uplights on trees or downlights on beds, extends the view into the evening. Balancing garden lighting with pool lighting creates a layered night scene.

Connect with paths

Paths from the pool area into the garden invite people to wander. A path that leads through the planting, with a bench or small seating area, extends the pool experience into the garden.

Consider seasonal changes

Gardens change through the year. Designing the pool area so the view remains appealing in spring, summer and autumn, and even winter, keeps it rewarding.

A pool area designed around a garden view lets the garden remain the star, with the pool as a reflective, inviting foreground.
